MOROCCO SAHARA DESERT TOURS

Morocco’s Sahara Desert is a place with stunning natural beauty and a rich cultural history. The Sahara Desert, known for its huge dunes, starry skies, and beautiful Berber heritage, has long drawn visitors looking for adventure, romance, and a deep connection to nature. Here’s a comprehensive guide on what to anticipate, the best Morocco Sahara desert tours to take, and how to make the most of your trip through Morocco’s spectacular desert landscape.

WHY A SAHARA DESERT TOUR IN MOROCCO SHOULD BE ON YOUR BUCKET LIST

The Sahara Desert is one of the most iconic landscapes on the planet: vast, timeless, and breathtakingly beautiful. If you’re looking for a travel experience that combines adventure, culture, natural wonders, and tranquility, a trip to Morocco’s Sahara Desert is a must.

  1. Admire the vastness of the Sahara:
There’s nothing like standing at the edge of the Erg Chebbi or Erg Chegaga dunes and admiring the endless sea of golden sand. The immensity and silence of the Sahara do not take away the impression of being on another planet.
  2. Camel trek in the dunes
Our Morocco desert tours through the Sahara are not complete without a back-country ride. These traditional hikes allow you to discover the desert as the source of the nomads for centuries. While you are balancing in the sand, you will feel completely disconnected from the modern world, in the best way possible.
  3. Sleep under the stars
Spending the night in a desert camp is one of the highlights of any trip to the Sahara desert. Whether you opt for simple Bedouin accommodation or luxury glamping, the remote location guarantees a complete absence of light pollution and some of the clearest night skies you’ll ever see. The Milky Way seems so close you could touch it.
  4. Meet the Amazigh (Berber) people and their culture

The Sahara desert isn’t just sand: it’s home to vibrant communities with rich traditions. During your desert trip, you’ll meet the Amazigh (Berber) locals, explore desert villages, and enjoy traditional Moroccan hospitality. You might be invited to share mint tea or listen to live Gnawa music around a campfire.

  1. Epic Photo Opportunities
From spectacular sand dunes to ancient kasbahs, oases, and camel caravans, the Sahara desert is a photographer’s dream. The light, colors, and textures of the desert create stunning images you won’t find anywhere else.
  2. Digital Detox and Mental Reset
The Sahara desert offers the rare luxury of peace. With limited Wi-Fi access and an absence of urban noise, it’s the perfect place to unwind, reflect, and reconnect with yourself. Many travelers describe their time in the desert as deeply peaceful, even spiritual.
  3. Unique Adventure Itineraries from Marrakech or Fes.
Traveling to the desert is an adventure in itself. all our desert tours from Marrakech and Fes include scenic stops such as the Atlas Mountains, the Dades Valley, the Todra Gorges, and historic villages like Ait Ben Haddou. The journey is as enriching as the destination.

POPULAR REGIONS FOR MOROCCO SAHARA DESERT TOURS

While the Morocco Sahara desert covers a vast territory, two major places in Morocco stand out for their accessibility and beauty.

Erg Chebbi: Erg Chebbi, located in Merzouga, is well-known for its spectacular sand dunes, which can reach heights of 150 meters (492 feet). Merzouga, known for its gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, has a well-developed tourism infrastructure. The location provides luxurious desert camping, traditional camel rides, and immersive experiences with the native Berber people.

Erg Chigaga: Erg Chigaga, in Zagora, is slightly more distant and less popular, providing a harsher desert experience. The dunes here are wilder and less accessible than those at Erg Chebbi, making the trip to Erg Chigaga an experience in and of itself. Erg Chigaga is a popular choice among those seeking a less marketed experience due to its wild beauty and sense of solitude.

Best Marrakech desert tour

I had a truly memorable experience exploring the gorges and the Moroccan desert. From the very beginning, Hassan – the owner – proved to be incredibly perceptive and responsive, quickly understanding my needs and preferences. Mustafa, my driver throughout the journey, was simply outstanding. Not only is he an excellent driver and a wonderful person, but he also speaks very good English, which made communication easy and pleasant. His patience, kindness, and flexibility turned the entire trip into a genuinely bespoke and enriching experience.

Top Morocco Sahara desert tour

My husband and I were looking for an authentic Moroccan experience, and Hassan absolutely delivered! He was great at teaching and telling stories about the places we were visiting/driving through. Each day, he would give us a plan and then we could make changes as we went based on our preferences. For example, I wanted an authentic Moroccan rug, and he found a local cooperative where I was able to see the rugs being made and learn more about the different styles (and also found the most amazing rugs!). The sights and stops on the tour are even better than described.

Best desert tour from Casablanca

I usually never leave reviews, but our tour through the desert was so wonderful I have to. We only stayed for 3 days, but we all wish we stayed longer because of how great a job Hassan did at showing us the best stops and answering any questions we had. Not only was he super accommodating to what we wanted to do/see, he also was very kind and put any stress we had at ease the entire trip. The tour was perfectly executed, with plenty of time to see different lookout spots, ride camels, sandboard, and lay in the desert under the stars. If you are feeling nervous or uncertain about visiting Morocco, we were too.
